Gilsonite for industrial road construction and asphalt:
Gilsonite is utilized in industrial road construction and asphalt. Cement compositions, incorporating petroleum asphalt, natural asphalt (Gilsonite), reactive oil, and elastomeric materials, result in superior Gilsonite cement with low viscosity during application and high viscosity, toughness, and tenacity after curing. Synthetic flux oil, containing asphaltites like Gilsonite, easily improves asphalt properties. It includes asphaltite and carrier oil, with heating depending on the carrier oil’s nature during mixing. Gilsonite is a go-to modifier for high-performance road surfaces, including hot mix pavements and pavement sealers.
In asphalt mix, Gilsonite boosts efficiency without additional materials, creating a highly solid material. As an additive, Gilsonite can replace SBS Polymers in asphalt modifiers, offering cost-effective solutions. Modified asphalt with Gilsonite shows higher stability, lower shape changes, and increased resistance to low temperatures and water compared to asphalt without Gilsonite.

Gilsonite for Industry Ink, Paint and Coating:
The paint composition consists of 20 gallons of petroleum solvent, 10 gallons of Linseed Oil, 10 gallons Turpentine, pounds of Gilsonite pigment, 4 gallons of Varnish mixture (17.8% Pentaerythritol Rosin Ester, 30.8% dehydrated Castor Oil, 1.4%Lead, Cobalt, and Manganese Naphthenates), 1 gallon wetting agent (Salts of petroleum Sulfonic Acids), 2 quarts of drier, and 1 pint of Hydrocarbon Silicon penetrating oil.
The Hydrocarbon Silicon penetrating oil is obtained by heating finely ground silicon Dioxide under pressure to about 148 ºC (300 ºF). The distillate product from fractional distillation of Gilsonite, obtained at a temperature range of about 221 ºC (430 ºF) to 225 ºC (438 ºF), is also included.
Gilsonite serves as a crucial component in the paint, widely used as the primary wetting agent for black inks in newspapers, headsets, and toner inks. In the ink industry, Gilsonite Resin competes favorably with hydrocarbon resins and Phenolic Resins. Its excellent carbon black dispersion properties are essential for achieving jet black in printed materials like magazines and high-quality publications. Gilsonite Resin’s resin application binds pigments to paper, making it a key ingredient in ink production for newspapers and magazines.
Gilsonite is a high-performance natural resin widely used in industrial inks, paints, and coatings, delivering deep gloss, rich color, enhanced durability, and superior resistance to water, chemicals, and weathering for long-lasting protective finishes.
The exceptional binding and unique qualities of Gilsonite make it an ideal additive for ink and paint. Due to its distinct properties, Gilsonite imparts excellent bonding to various materials, providing protection against the elements. It serves as a critical, high-performance, and cost-effective additive for anti-corrosive paints, underbody paints, and pipe coatings.
Coating and painting with Gilsonite result in a high-quality finish suitable for exterior surfaces like metal and composition roofs, fire escapes, storage tanks, piping, structural steel, and various iron structures. This coating is versatile and can be applied to concrete, masonry, or metal sidewalls. The blend of Gilsonite with an oil-based solvent in the coating provides outstanding protection against water, sunlight, and snow, ensuring durability and longevity of the coated surfaces.
Gilsonite usage in industrial foundry sand additives:
Gilsonite serves as an additive for foundry sand pre-blends, contributing to reduced smoke and emissions. The additive is a mixture comprising one part iron oxide, one part highly volatile carbonaceous material, and four parts metallurgical coke. This additive constitutes one-quarter of the foundry sand pre-blend, with the remaining three-quarters primarily consisting of clays.
For high-value iron castings, Gilsonite stands out, offering unparalleled performance. Foundries globally have recognized for decades that adding Gilsonite to fire for molten iron brings superior performance to foundry sand. In the realm of complex, high-value iron castings, Natural Bitumen, like Gilsonite, performs exceptionally. Its naturally superior properties result in high-quality castings with a better finish and fewer imperfections.
Compared to sea coal, Gilsonite generates three times as much gas for improved mold release, provides high lustrous carbon for a superior finish, and creates a reductive atmosphere that reduces reactions between mold and casting, leading to fewer imperfections. The use of Gilsonite in foundry processes contributes to enhanced casting quality and efficiency.
